Axis I/O Modules: Integration with Sensors, Relays, and Automation

I/O modules expand the capabilities of cameras and security systems by connecting external sensors (PIR, magnetic contacts, smoke detectors) and actuators (relays, sirens, illuminators). Integration via standard industrial protocols (Modbus, MQTT, OPC-UA) enables complete security automation without requiring proprietary PLCs.

Digital Inputs and Outputs

AXIS A9188 Network I/O Relay Module offers 8 supervised digital inputs and 8 output relays (configurable NO/NC, 230VAC 2A or 30VDC 2A). A typical application connects 8 perimeter PIR detectors to inputs and triggers 8 LED illuminators via output relays. Configurable logic via web interface enables complex automation — PIR#1 triggered after business hours activates illuminator#1 + PTZ#1 navigation to preset + high-resolution recording.

A9801 I/O Audio Module adds analog audio input (external microphone or line) and audio output (active speaker, electronic siren) to cameras without native audio capability. Balanced XLR input reduces electromagnetic interference on long cable runs. Configurable audio detection triggers recording when screams, glass break, or metallic sounds are detected.

Access Control Integration

Expanding door controllers through I/O modules adds inputs for REX (Request to Exit), magnetic contacts, panic buttons, and glass break detectors. Outputs trigger electromagnetic locks, gates, turnstiles, and perimeter sirens. Wire supervision detects tamper (cut wire, short circuit), generating an immediate alarm.

Interlock logic between adjacent doors prevents tailgating — door#2 can only be unlocked if door#1 is closed and locked per the magnetic contact reading. Man-trap implementation in high-security areas requires credential validation at the outer door, complete closure, second credential validation at the inner door before release. The I/O module manages all logic without requiring an additional controller.

Industrial Protocols

Modbus RTU/TCP connectivity enables integration with building management systems (BMS), SCADA, and fire alarm panels. Reading coils (digital outputs) and input registers (digital inputs) via periodic polling synchronizes equipment status. Writing holding registers allows external systems to trigger relays — BMS deactivates exterior lighting during an emergency, SCADA triggers a siren when process temperature exceeds a threshold.

MQTT publish/subscribe provides integration with IoT and cloud platforms. The I/O module publishes events (input#3 triggered, output#5 deactivated) to MQTT broker topics. Subscribers (Node-RED, Home Assistant, analytics systems) process events in real time. Commands received via MQTT (topic: axis/io/output/2/set, payload: ON) trigger relays remotely.

Automation Scenarios

Logistics and manufacturing use I/O modules for vehicle counting at loading docks. An inductive sensor at the entrance publishes an MQTT event, incrementing a dashboard counter. A sensor at the exit decrements the counter. An alert fires when the counter reaches maximum capacity, preventing congestion. Synchronization with cameras captures plates and timestamps for each vehicle for auditing.

Critical infrastructure such as data centers and electrical substations integrate I/O modules with environmental sensors (temperature, humidity, water detection). Threshold exceeded triggers SNMP trap notification to the NOC (Network Operations Center) and activates forced ventilation via relay. Measurement history stored via Modbus enables trend analysis and predictive maintenance.

Edge Analytics and Local Processing

ACAP (Axis Camera Application Platform) allows installation of custom applications on I/O modules for local processing without requiring an external server. An event counter application processes input pulses (turnstiles, scales, flow sensors) generating hourly, daily, and monthly statistics. Export via CSV to BI systems.

A sequencer application controls complex state machines — a 5-step process where each output can only be triggered when the corresponding input confirms completion of the previous step. Configurable timeout automatically reverts the process if a step doesn't complete within expected time. Detailed state transition log facilitates failure troubleshooting.

Installation and Power

DIN rail mounting in electrical panels or industrial control panels. IP20 rating requires protected indoor installation. Operating temperature -20C to +50C serves most commercial applications. Industrial models (AXIS A9801-E) offer IP66 and extended temperature -40C to +65C for outdoor or severe environment installation.

PoE (class 3) power simplifies installation by eliminating the need for an external source. Removable terminal block connectors facilitate wiring — screw loosens terminal, wire inserted, screw tightens. Silk-screened numbering identifies each input/output, reducing wiring errors. Status LEDs indicate each I/O state, facilitating commissioning and troubleshooting.

Scalability and Architecture

Distributed configuration allows multiple network I/O modules to respond to events in a coordinated manner. A smoke detector triggered in zone#1 activates sirens in all zones via MQTT broadcast. Cross-zone logic reduces false alarms — a fire alarm only triggers if two detectors in adjacent zones simultaneously confirm smoke.

Event aggregation via AXIS Camera Station centralizes monitoring of hundreds of I/O modules in a unified dashboard. Filters by event type (input triggered, output deactivated, tamper, communication loss) and location accelerate incident response. Synchronized playback correlates I/O events with camera video, facilitating forensic investigation.
